Dear hiring manager,
I am writing to express my interest in the position of Designer at Time Out.
Well, about me, my path began in college where I studied English with a focus in creative writing and the visual arts. My sophomore year I began working for the school newspaper, first as a writer, then as a designer to help lift the impact of stories through illustrating them visually. I learned that a strong visual approach captivated readers and doubled the impact the stories had on their audience. Something words alone can't achieve.
After graduating I continued a path of editorial design working for publications striving to inform communities with local news, whether it be a restaurant review or in-depth pieces on crime, racism and government corruption. I have worked for news outlets in South Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey and eight years later finding this path lead me to Brooklyn, New York, working for USA Today.
While my work up until now has been incredibly rewarding, it's not the end of the path. I am constantly seeking opportunities to work for organizations that inform and help the public, while also informing and educating me to become a better person. I believe Time Out would be a perfect fit for this. A place where my talents are utilized and strengthened, while helping me grow personally.
If you feel my background aligns with Time Out and the position I would love to learn more. If not, well, thanks for making it this far.
Cheers,
Ian Scot Young
